Did you know that Steltman Juwelier also has a museum? Here historical and contemporary Steltman pieces are exhibited. You can visit this museum by appointment.
History
In 1917 Steltman was founded in The Hague by Johannes Steltman. The first Steltman jewelry store was called 'NV Joaillerie Artistique'. After the death of Johannes Steltman in 1961, Steltman passed into other hands.
In 1977, Fred Brom becomes the director-owner of Steltman Juwelier. The more than 100-year tradition of handmade jewelry is continued under his leadership and Steltman specializes further in colored gemstones, diamonds and watches. In the studio, new jewelry is still designed and manufactured and repairs, restorations and appraisals are carried out.
In 2017, Steltman celebrates its 100th anniversary and Steltman Juwelier is awarded the title of Purveyor to the Royal Household.
The Steltman Museum
In 2021, Fred Brom, after a career of 43 years at Steltman and more than 50 years in the jewelry trade, hands Steltman over to his sons. However, Brom remains involved with Steltman as curator of the newly established Steltman Museum.
Brom has been collecting original handmade Steltman pieces during his ownership, with the hope of one day exhibiting them. In 2017, the year in which Steltman celebrates its 100th anniversary, it is time. On 3 November 2017, the successful exhibition 'Haagse Chic-Steltman, 100 years of jewellery and silver' will be opened in Gemeente Museum Den Haag (now Kunstmuseum) to mark this 100th anniversary.
The Hague Chic exhibition attracts many visitors and Brom decides to continue an ongoing exhibition at the store on Plaats. The Steltman Museum displays artistic jewellery by Steltman Juwelier from 1917 to the present. Such as a beautifully carved jade from the interbellum, characteristic Steltman jewellery with lotus motifs, imaginative and graceful animal figures from the 1950s, and modern designs from later periods. The different styles and materials of more than a hundred years of craftsmanship show how the jewel moved with the fashion of the time, but also the function that the jewel assumed in it. Including some designs with a royal history. Steltman has contributed to the royal jewellery collection for six generations; from engagement rings to personal gifts and adjustments to the royal jewellery. In addition to jewellery, Steltman silver plays a major role in the exhibition. For example, silver for beautifully set tables or for a beautiful interior can be seen.
Visiting the exhibition is possible by appointment. You will also get a look behind the scenes of the goldsmith's studio.
